FAQs

What are the AKC STAR Puppy and Canine Good Citizen titles?

1

The AKC STAR Puppy, Canine Good Citizen (CGC), Community Canine (CGCA), and Urban CGC (CGCU) programs are nationally recognized titles that reward good manners and responsible dog ownership. Each level builds on the last, progressing from puppy foundations to advanced real-world skills in increasingly challenging environments.

These titles are excellent goals for family pets, future therapy dogs, and owners who simply want a well-behaved companion.

Does my dog have to train with you to take a test?

2

No. We are happy to evaluate dogs that have been trained elsewhere, provided they are ready to meet the testing standards. Passing is based on the dog's performance during the evaluation, not where or how they were trained.

If you're unsure whether your dog is ready, we also offer preparation and coaching to help you approach test day with confidence.

What happens if my dog doesn't pass?

3

It's not the end of the world—and it's not a reflection of your worth as an owner. Many dogs need additional practice before earning a title, especially in distracting environments.

If a dog does not pass, we'll explain which exercises need improvement and help you develop a plan to prepare for a future attempt. The goal is building a truly well-trained dog, not just collecting ribbons.

Are these titles worth it if I don't plan to compete?

4

Absolutely. The biggest benefit of these programs is not the certificate—it's the training that goes into earning it. The skills tested in STAR Puppy, CGC, CGCA, and CGCU are the same skills that make everyday life easier: walking politely on a leash, staying calm around people and dogs, coming when called, and behaving appropriately in public.

For many families, these titles provide a fun and measurable way to work toward the ultimate goal: a dog you can confidently take anywhere.
