The fine print...

FAQ

Q: What is your training philosophy? A: I follow a balanced training approach, meaning I use all parts of how dogs learn: rewarding good choices, removing rewards for unwanted behavior, and when appropriate, applying fair punishment to stop unsafe or undesirable behaviors. I believe in the humane and responsible use of training tools such as prong collars or e-collars when they are the right fit for the dog and owner. These tools are never used harshly—they are used to increase clarity, create safety, and give dogs more freedom once they understand expectations. My goal is always to keep training fair, ethical, and effective, helping your dog succeed while strengthening your relationship.

Q: Where are you located? A: I don’t operate out of a traditional brick-and-mortar facility. Instead, my board & train dogs and overnight boarding clients live in my home with me and my family, so they receive care in a safe, comfortable, and real-life environment. For safety and privacy reasons, I don’t share my home address publicly. However, I service most of Massachusetts and southern New Hampshire—from Boston to Derry, and Gardner to Newburyport.

Q: What’s the difference between private in-home lessons and a board & train program? A: Neither option is “better” than the other—it really depends on your dog, your lifestyle, and your goals. Both lead to a well-trained dog, but the process looks different: Private In-Home Lessons Think of this like getting the blueprint for a house. I’ll show you exactly how to train and guide your dog, but you’ll be the one doing the daily building. This is a great fit if you want to be hands-on, learn the skills yourself, and have time to practice consistently. Board & Train This is more like moving into a house that’s already built. I do the heavy lifting by laying the foundation and teaching your dog the basics while they stay with me. When your dog comes home, you’ll still need to maintain the training—like keeping up with house maintenance—but you’ll have a solid head start. This option is often ideal for busy households (like families with kids, demanding work schedules, or limited time for daily training). No matter which path you choose, the outcome is the same: a dog who understands what’s expected, and an owner with the tools to maintain progress.

Q: Will balanced training and the use of tools make my dog’s behavior worse? A: When used correctly, balanced training and training tools will not make behavior worse. In fact, they often bring more clarity and consistency, which helps dogs feel secure and understand what’s expected of them. Problems arise only when training is done incorrectly—for example: Poor timing (correcting or rewarding at the wrong moment), Non-contingent punishment (punishing without the dog understanding why), or Inappropriate use of tools (using them harshly, inconsistently, or without guidance). In these cases, a dog may become confused, anxious, or frustrated—not because of the method itself, but because of how it’s applied. My approach is to use tools humanely and responsibly, always paired with clear communication and positive reinforcement. This ensures your dog learns in a way that is fair, effective, and confidence-building, not damaging.

Q: Why do I need a consultation before booking training or boarding? A: A consultation is the first step because it allows me to learn about your dog, your goals, and your household so I can recommend the program that best fits your needs. Every dog is different, and a quick “one size fits all” approach doesn’t set anyone up for success. The consultation also gives you a chance to ask questions, understand my training philosophy, and see if we’re the right fit to work together. This way, we can move forward with a clear plan and realistic expectations. I do charge for consultations because they require my time, expertise, and resources—just like any professional service. While the consultation isn’t “free,” it’s an important investment that ensures your dog’s training or boarding experience starts on the right track.

Unlimited Training Package? Take your dog’s training to the next level with unlimited private lessons over six months! This program is designed for owners who want real, lasting results and are ready to take training seriously. Flexible scheduling based on the trainer’s availability (book early—there’s usually a 2-week waitlist). Consistent practice between sessions is expected to reinforce progress. This is a commitment-based program: frequent cancellations, no-shows, or lack of follow-through may result in contract termination. Perfect for dedicated owners who want intensive, hands-on support while giving their dog the tools to succeed.

Scheduling Policy

To provide the best service to all clients and ensure smooth scheduling, please review the following policies:

1. Consultations Required
All new clients must complete an initial consultation before booking lessons, board & train, or boarding services. This allows me to assess your dog’s needs and recommend the most appropriate program.

2. Appointment Scheduling
Training sessions are scheduled by appointment only. Availability may vary, and I recommend booking in advance to secure your preferred times. Appointments may be made in our online portal, via direct message to Sarah, or in person during a session.

3. Cancellations & Rescheduling

  • Please provide at least 48 hours’ notice if you need to cancel or reschedule a lesson.

  • Cancellations made with less than 24 hours’ notice may result in the session being forfeited or a cancellation fee being applied.

  • Appointments that are not confirmed at least 24 hours in advance will be automatically cancelled. It is the responsibility of the client to keep track of their training calendar and confirm via automated appointment reminder or direct message.

  • Repeated last-minute cancellations may affect your ability to book future sessions.

4. Punctuality
Please be on time for your scheduled appointment. Sessions will begin and end at the scheduled time. If you arrive late, the session will still end at the original time.

5. Board & Train / Boarding Drop-Off & Pick-Up
Drop-off and pick-up times are by appointment only. Early or late arrivals outside of agreed times may incur additional fees.

6. Payment & Deposits

  • A non-refundable deposit of 50% will be required to reserve board & train or boarding dates.

  • Payment for private lessons is due at the time of booking unless otherwise arranged.

7. Emergencies
I understand that emergencies happen. Please communicate with me as soon as possible if an unexpected situation arises, and I will do my best to accommodate within reason.
